Sometimes things aren’t necessarily the way we think they are.
Sometimes they’re not even close.

For example, there have always been tales of angels and guardian angels - beautiful winged beings who hover near us and guide our steps, protecting us from danger.

And they’re right.

In a way.

Sort of.

But angels aren’t always invisible.  And they don’t necessarily have wings.  Sometimes they are disguised as people we know, or at least people we think we know.  They exist in this world to guard and protect, but they are bound by gravity and time and all the other weighty worries of this flawed existence.  And they have feelings - - and hopes - - and dreams - - and hearts that can be easily broken.

“Why?” she screamed.  “Just tell me why?”  Acadia paced across the marble floor, her slippers making no noise on the cool, smooth surface.  “I could have saved him.  That’s my job.  I could have prevented this from happening.”

“Sit down.” The voice brooked no argument.

“What kind of watcher am I, if I’m not permitted to intervene when my human needs help?”  Her spirit was in agony.  Joseph had been badly hurt and they had not allowed her to do a damn thing. She could have cried – but tears were not permitted.

“I heard that, Acadia.  Cursing is not permitted, even in your thoughts.  You know that.”

“Sorry.”  She wasn’t.

“Lying isn’t permitted, either.”

Huffing in consternation, Cady started to get up.  She needed to check on Joseph.

“Acadia, you must sit still and listen.”  At the stern reprimand, Acadia slid into her seat and narrowed her attention to the gentleman sitting in front of her.

“Sorry.  I am a bit preoccupied.”  She smoothed out the folds of the soft shift she wore and tried to calm down.  “Joseph is scared and sad and I don’t know what to do for him.”

A breath of pure frustration erupted from the terse lips of Master Gabe.  “It has never been your responsibility to affect the happiness of your subjects, just their safety.”

“If that is true, why wasn’t I permitted to stop that horrible crash from happening?  I was there, hovering right over him.  It would have been easy to push that flying motorcycle just an inch to keep it from landing square on his back.  I could have stopped this!”  Cady knew she was dancing right on the edge of insubordination.  And the consequences of that charge could be dire – eternally dire – and warm.

“It was meant to be, Acadia.  There is a purpose for everything – even tragedy.”

“What possible purpose could hurting my Joseph have?” She hung her head in despair, not knowing what the future would hold for her charge – or for her.

“Everything has a purpose.  The events of human lives are woven together in an imperceptible tapestry.  And neither humanity nor the angels are permitted to see the big picture or know the reason that bad things happen to good people.  Our knowledge is limited to protect us.”

“I understand that.  I just don’t happen to agree with it.”  Master Gabe looked at her sharply.

“Regardless, circumstances have changed for you.  You are leaving.”

“Leaving?”  Acadia was stunned.  “Where in the heavens would I go?”

“You are going to Earth.”  At those impossible words, Acadia almost swooned.  “Joseph, your charge, requires more interaction than you are able to give him here.  He’s about to face the ultimate challenge – even greater than what he has already gone through.  Because of the importance of his life mission, we can’t take any chances that he will veer from his destiny.  You cannot fail, Acadia.  Failure is not an option.”

“I would never fail Joseph.  I love him.”

And she did love him.  Acadia loved everything about Joseph McCoy.  His looks.  His personality.  His intelligence.  His stubbornness.  His daring.  And most of all: his soul.  Acadia loved Joseph almost more than she loved God.  And that fact could get her in serious trouble.  Angels are supposed to love God above all else.  Acadia tried, but Joseph owned her heart.

“Things are going to be difficult for you on earth, Acadia,” Master Gabe cautioned.  At her puzzled look, he leaned back in his chair and tried to explain.  “You are loved here in heaven.  In fact, you are one of the favorites, despite your tendency toward stubbornness.  Your beauty and goodness is unchallenged in heaven.  It won’t be like that on Earth.”

“I can live with that.  As long as I am with Joseph, I can endure anything,” she assured him.

“You may think so, but it’s still going to take some getting used to.  Beauty is not defined on Earth as it is defined here.  What makes you beloved here - will not be valued down there."

Acadia did not understand.  "What difference does it make if I am beautiful or not?  I only want to help Joseph.  He won't care about how I look.  Will he?"
Her innocent question caused Master Gabe to take a deep breath and consider carefully before answering. Acadia was strong in many ways, but her little spirit was fragile.  She didn't realize how easily she could be broken.

"That remains to be seen."  Lying was forbidden, but the truth was sometimes as devastating as a lie.  "There is one more thing you should know."  Reaching into his desk for a file folder, he took out a form.  "We are going to send you back to the beginning.  You can't just drop into the time/space continuum fully grown.  We’ve processed the paperwork; you are going to have to be born and grow up and make your way in the world just like any other human being."

"How will I find Joseph?" Acadia was afraid.  This sounded entirely too complicated.  She knew Joseph needed her – now more than ever.  But how could she be more effective as a human than an angel?  It didn’t make sense.
"Don't worry about those details.  Leave that to me.  Joseph will find you when he needs you the most."  He filled out his part of the form and handed it to her with instructions on where to go to arrange for her transfer.

"When will I return here?"  There was so much she did not know.  Acadia's head was spinning.

"You will return here when your job has been completed.  We'll be in touch."  With that he hurried her off.  Master Gabe shook his head.  It would take a miracle for this mission to go off without a hitch.

*****

Cady jerked awake.  Good Grief!  Throwing off the cover, she fanned herself.  It was unlike her to suffer from nightmares.  Lying there she tried to remember the dream.  It had definitely made her uncomfortable.  Try as she might, she couldn't remember the details.  All she could remember was a name.  Joseph.  Joseph.  Who the hell was Joseph?
